Fashioncores.

ATTENTION: Before to read this article you should read this and this. Thank you. Probably this is the most complicated and strange scene that ever existed, for the all misinformation that exists.

Fashioncores born in 2004/2005 but we could ensure that their aesthetic bases could be between 2001 and 2003.

At first, fashioncore (it can be written like fashionxcore or FXC) was a joke that designs a many post-hardcore and alternative rock bands that apart from their music, they fixed in their a bit dark aesthetic because so many bands could be influenced by Horror Punk.

This implies that this styles became overcrowded  and created a general aesthetic, leading to a new trend, a new urban tribe. It will call fashioncore kids.

The problem was that this word was only used by hardcore scene and similars, meanwhile comunication media (and suposed specialized magazines) was calling mistakely emo at these style. For this infoxication born the "new emo kids" (fake emos).

As I said earlier, the real emo behaved as an archetype of a crying  boy but also sensitive and smart, while the fake emos were only part of the true emo's archetype, the melancholy and exaggerated, adding gothic topics that goths were fighting over them since years ago, like self injury or suicide...

In 2006, have the boom...and all turned twisted, because thanks to "fake emo" the fashioncore began to extend, in wrong form, but the same fake emos realized that their music scene was plenty of teenagers with tastes more distanced (Tokio Hotel, Avril Lavigne...) to their music and then some of them accepted himselfs like fashioncores or scene kids.

Scenes (called scene kids too), how I told many days ago, are young people that jumped to fashion to fashion (generally urban tribes) doing these styles in success. Many times they mix elements and for this way this styles evolutioned or created a new trends/urban tribes.

The problem is that in nowadays we don't have so many scenes (because for to be it's necessary to have a importance and fame) and the most of boys/girls that consedered theirselves scenes WASN'T, they only was confused fashiocores again. The true scenes left the fashioncore style yet but thanks to scenes have been created new hairstyles (like sun hairstyle in boys, the introduction of angelbites, the kind of dyes like zebra or leopard...)

Estética fashioncore (paso a paso)
Fashiocore's aesthetic (step by step)

Pelo.
Hair.

Boys: The fringe is long and straight. Meanwhile the fake emos hide his eye (getting a lazy eye in medical terms) the fashioncores comb their hair with the objective of to stay cool but don't mean that don't have vision or be a trouble. The haircut is generally so accurated, going to professional hairdressers or at least searching a friend who cut their hair perfectly. It's so common that wear dyes in parts on their hair (the most classic is black and bleached), especially the fringe.

Girls: the fringe is too large and askew to right. Many times could be subjected by bobby pin. The hair was combed (in the back of their heads) for doing a huge volume. Usually is dyed in colours. Is so common the introduction of coloured hair extensions, with motifs like strips, zebra or leopard (introduced by scene girls). For accessory is classic a bow.

Ropa
Clothing

Boy: The slim fit black jean is a classic. It could be mixed up with boots, Converse or vans, a tight T-shirt of a band. the hoodies can be tight too. Is usually to use belts with big clasp, bandanas or shawls to subject the hair. The brands for clothes is Atticus, Bleeding Star, Famous, Vans, Converse All Stars, Drop Dead...

Girl: At first, they looked like boys. But later, thanks to scene girls, the fashion developed to dresses, punk skirts, broken tights, boots or Converse / Vans, etc...In reality a fashioncore girl distinguished by her hair. Hell Bunny is a very common brand too.

Símbolos y prints (generalmente en colgantes y accesorios)
Prints & Simbols (generally in pendants and accesories)

Both sexes: Diamonds, stars, hearts, brass knuckle, cupcakes, Gloomy Bear, Skeletanimals, Hello Kitty...the bone prints (Horror Punk's herency) or stripped. The scenes introduced  a melted Chanel symbol but don't have success in comparation of others.

Make-up.

Unlike the people's believes, is not a obligation that boy's must be make-uped. Is a option but they don't prefer that. The make up in girls is common. Their eyeshadow and nails are in black but it can have some changes.

Piercings & Tattoos.

Piercings preferidos: Snakebites, angelbites, septum, bridge.

Prefered piercings: Snakebites, angelbites, septum, bridge.
Prefered tatoos: Usually in arms, but in torax too.
Plugs (but little).

Música
Music

Preferentemente post-hardcore, metalcore, nintendocore y deathcore. También pueden escuchar rock alternativo y electroclash.

They preferr post-hardcore, metalcore, nintendocore y deathcore. They can listen alternative rock and   electroclash too.

Last day, the famous blog about the host movement in spanish SP Host Club, updated a new post based on an article written by Patrick Macías (a Californian young japanese culture lover who lives in Japan).

In these post he explained that the superfamous mall 109-2, dedicated to male fashion, it's in a huge crisis. The most clothes are really expensive and the customers prefer to buy clothes at better price. We must to have in mind that in the gyaru scene the % of boys is so low than the girls.

But this is not the only reason that the gyaru-o trend is finishing:
  • 109 continues to attrack girls but the boy's floor don't have some success, except in the 2007 gyaru-o  boom.
  • To sell limited edition products, extremely expensive.
  • The deal with gaijin (foreign) in a cold and rude way, closing the scene.
  • The most of boys who in 2007 were gyaru-o in nowadays they aren't (at most some of them could be host)
  • The imposition of Amekaji style everywhere, turning all so monotonous.
  • Now exist more gyaru-o in the fashion magazines (like Men's Egg) than in the streets.

¿Qué pensáis? ¿Creéis que es sólo un bache? ¿Salvarán los gaijin gyaru-o la escena?
What do you think? It's only a bad patch? May the gaijin gyaru will save the scene?

Real emo aesthetics

We can fix the birth of emo fashion in 90's (in the 80's the aesthetic was the same of hardcore), in other words, during their fusion with indie. We musn't to understand like a boom or a way to say I'm so emo!, because  that was the look that they were wearing, although theirselves don't accept that they were wearing in the same way.

Then, in this epoque, the emo aesthetic was created, and this was a mixture between indie and nerd aesthetic beucase in their lyrics a lot of times had philosophy and literature references and quotes.

The boys usually have a short fringe. The look is so retro, rhombus or woolen sweaters, often sleveless, cardigans, straight corduroy trousers, super slim or straight jeans. Sneakers (Converse, for example) or boat shoes (they prefer the deck shoes with more sole). 1491 Doc Marten's shoes (in black version) was a classic. The mosket-key ring reminds a 90's air.

The girls usually wear a more fringe (but straight) or an hairstyle like garçon or medium long hair (like Audrey Tatou in Amélie). Like boys, they usually wear vintage T-shirts, sweaters, slim or straight jeans, sneakers like Converse or Mary Janes (specially Doc Marten's).

Both usually wear checked shirts. The socks might be in romboids or similar motifs. The brogues are used but in a less way.

Then, why had been designed as emo an aesthetic that is so different than the real?

If you have a look at my last post, you can be that in 2000's the emo genre fell into the mainstream and one of their bands (AFI) changed their look to horror punk style and later to a new concept of aesthetic, more androgynous and new. More bands were influected by them - or at least, they had the same influences - did the same. It's easy to see pop-punk bands (for example Blink 182) which one of their members had a fringe yet or they make up their eyes with eyeliner (Green Day), etc...this aesthetic (fashioncore) was a logical evolution of the look that was selling in that moment but with a fake name. The scene people were in this moment dressed like fashioncores, were in charge of  to do an aesthetic evolution.

Then, is probably that you have a question...¿who are you to say what is emo and what it isn't?

For start, the information are obtained in through of people that are really involucrated in emo scene since years ago. I remember - in 2006 - how the information in Wikipedia had been changed in a progressive form. At first, it contains the true information, butfor the infoxication and time it converted in the idea of fake emo that everybody know.

Se nombraba a grupos como The get up kids o Mineral.

More or less in Wikipedia explained that they are young people that they didn't have any obligatory aesthetic (like Punk), usually wore glasses, wore with stripped T-shirts with dark or not brightly colours. In it bands like Mineral or THe Gep Up Kids were mentioned. Now, this information has been deleted and reemplaced by that is commonly called as fashioncore.

It's so easy to see old photographies by 90's bands and we can see perfectly emos between normal people (basicaly they are worn by the same aesthetics cannons) or magazines scans.

For the people who don't belive me or don't believe the real information, the emo was a DIY genre because it takes away from mainstream...and the most famous suposed emo bands appears in MTV or wanted a lot of money for showing. In the true emo the most lyrics talks about existencial doubts, doing reference to philosophy, literature or art meanwhile the fake emo (called weemo too) talks about High Schools, being sad  because your boyfriend/girlfriend brokes up with you and to be a rockstar with hairspray and black nail polish.

Emo music.

Before to star, I must warn that this is another controversial topic but in nowadays this is the most accepted version between in the people who are relationed in the hardcore scene. This is a really long and tedious post, so...¡accept my apologizes!

First of all, I must to explain how the emo born. In the 1980, the hardcore scene, which was in his time a evolution of punk but in a hard way, had a relative high success in Washington DC. Then, with the influence of the band Hüsker Dü because they had an more introspective and complicated HXC style, emo began to create. The experts say that the name had been created in a concert of Rites of Spring (other people said that was in a Embrace show) when a fan shouted You are so emo! because the lyrics were very intimate in comparation of the  classic hardcore lyrics (about social protest).

This scene stayed between 1982 to 1992 more or less, when most emo that were similar to hardcore become extinct by itself, something which involved the disappearance of bands like Gray Matter, Beefeater, Moss Icon or Fire Party.

Actually, this scene will never be given, because since 1992 the emo was mixed with indie and never sounded like the original emo or at least of a majority way in the scene. Then It was when  the second wave came, which ended up being a little softer than the first, because the concerts weren't so linked with the punk and hardcore world. That was where the emergence of large bands like Mineral, The Promise Ring or Christie Front Drive, and the groups at the end of 1990, inserting the emo  in the mass media, Jimmy Eat World and The Get Up Kids.

Despite this softer style, something happened that we could relate it to the street punk, as there were some bands that began to make harder emo, more hardcore, like Mohinder or Angel Hair between 1991 and 1994. As expected, this ended drifting in another style, screamo. Of this style I will tell you later.

Within in the hardcore scene they despise often the emo, calling them whiners and somethings like that for the nihilistic / sad / depressed  lyrics of the songs, which later was applied to more mesure in the music scene (more than once emo singers ended the concerts crying and screaming on stage). Mineral, in turn, also helped with the image of young smart and sensitive with lyrics like she is beautiful and I am weak, silly and shy, even contempt the disdain previously named. That is something that is adquired and distorted in a "emo" philosophy but as I said above, that will be discussed in another post.

We get at 2000's. The Get Up Kids were shown on MTV and Jimmy Eat World edited Clarity, a CD that they started to become famous because one of their songs appeareded in a Drew Barrymore's film. This, plus the creation of bands that weren't emo (they are alternative rock or post-hardcore...) but they were influected by emo (for example Saves the Day, Taking back Sunday or Thursday) when some were sponsored by Coca-cola and similar corporations, started a boom that later would become what is in nowadays known as emo (even is alternative rock).

The band AFI, previously linked to the hardcore and emo (there are posters that show when they played with real emo bands)  was slowly drifting towards horror punk influences and later placed in the hands of producers like Blink182, falling in the electronics, alternative rock and a dark aesthetic. At that time most bands were added, influenced by horror punk and alternative rock such as Funeral for a Friend, My Chemical Romance and Aiden, creating a dark aesthetic that everyone would know the emo (which is actually fashioncore)

Meantime, what were the real emos and their scene?

They mind in their bussiness, even though Davey Havok had been selled and make-uped himself and the name of their musical style was getting dirty, they remainded faithful to true emo and screamo (later they called skramz to diferenciate the fake screamo to the real). In 2006 and 2007, the fake emo and screamo were the most successful style. Including musical magazines (like Kerrang or Rockzone) didn't labeled correctly this styles.

At present, even if you don't believe that, the false musical scene begins to fade, as most fans of the first wave of fake emo saw that their bands negated to be emo (which  that makes sense, if we compare the sound  suposed emo bands like Panic at the disco and the Black Veil Brides to the original emo), which disappeared bands and that they were tired to stay like that... and the real scene up again, but shyly, to the people who actually found the real emo, discovering their passion

Benavente y Curra hablando de su pelo.

¿Los conoces?
¿Do you recognize they?

¡Acertaste!

¡OK! They are Eduardo Benavente [RIP] and Ana Curra, the members of post-punk spanish bands like Parálisis Permanente and Alaska y los Pegamoides. In this short video, which are extracted for a old TV program (in the 80's), they talk about their hair. How is visible, in this moment they were members of Alaska y los Pegamoides but they wore a trad goth look.

Traduction of the video:

InterviewerCan you tell me how many time  it takes you go like that in hairdresser's?
Ana: The hairdresser's....but domestic because I do it myself.
I: How you do it?
A: I do it at home...I backcomb my hair, I do a tease of these and later I use the hairspray and then I go out. 10 minutes.
I: How long?
A: 10 minutes (she smile)
I: Eduardo, in Pegamoides too, when you go at the street what say the people?
Eduardo: A lot of things...
I: For example?
E: Well...Here goes a Pegamoide!

Military Lolita & Nazism

A few days ago the lolita's brand Metamorphose released a  new military look collection. Previously I've written about this Lolita's new style (it exists since a few months ago). And if the military lolita had  detractors, now has even more.

The collection by  Metamorphose are branded "nazi" because they look like the uniform worn by the Germans during the Second World War. While there is some resemblance (eg, the logo of the hat) is actually a mixture of many military uniforms, from the Russian to the American (the cap desing is a mixture between this and German), the Japanese, etc ...

But the collection has caused such a huge shock that before a complaint by American lolitas Metamorphose is thinking to don't to sell the product abroad. Lolita_secrets web page, the  continues discussion over who are in favor of the collection (saying that it is a simply military style) and others saying it is totally Nazi or at least it looks like that and for this reason shouldn't  be marketed .

¿Qué opinas tú?
What is your opinion?
